ASSISTANT OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OFILLUSTRATION Maine College of Art & Design (MECA&D) invitesapplications for an Assistant/Associate Professor of Illustrationwith duties commencing on or about August 15, 2022. The College is a cornerstone ofDowntown Portland, a diverse and vibrant waterfront city in a statewhich has served as an inspiration to artists for hundreds ofyears. MECA&D's history as a longstanding cultural institutionin New England speaks to the College's commitment to the value ofcreativity and the universality of artistic expression. Newadditions to the College's programs include the Bob Crewe Programin Art and Music, a minor in Sustainable Ecosystems in Art andDesign, the nationally known Salt Institute of Documentary Studies,and a BFA in Animation and Game Art, all of which complementMECA&D's long-running Public Engagement program. In the summerof 2020, Maine College of Art & Design completed a keycomponent of its new strategic plan by hiring a Diversity, Equity,and Inclusion Officer. The DEI Officer works in Tandem with IndigoArts Alliance, a local non-profit organization committed to theartistic development of people of African descent, and helps guidethe college to fulfill its strategic goal to ?Develop a Culture ofSocial Justice, Racial Equity, and Inclusion.? Maine College of Art & Design is seeking anAssistant/Associate Professor to carry forward these values throughits Illustration Program. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to helpshape and expand the program, defining its future for decades tocome. POSITION SUMMARY AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Assistant/Associate Professor of Illustration must becommitted to graduating students with the skill sets and visualliteracy required for their future success in a dynamic andcompetitive field. Candidates will demonstrate excellence andinnovation in their teaching, and a genuine interest in activelymentoring students. Like all Full time faculty at MECA&D, theywill teach a 3/3 course load. The position's primary focus is inthe BFA program. In addition to illustration classes, teachingassignments will include foundation courses, seminars, and/orgraduate courses as experience and opportunity allow.Individualized attention and effective teaching are hallmarks of aMECA&D education; therefore, a palpable engagement in pedagogywith a focus on continually improving the learning environment isrequired. It is expected that the candidate has the capacity to foster apositive working environment, can collaborate in the continueddevelopment of the Illustration major, and will contribute to thefulfillment of the college's mission. The candidate will bringenthusiasm and rigor to the program, will be expected to contributeto the life of a small, collaborative department, and possess astrong commitment to community. QUALIFICATIONS The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence inteaching; will be an Illustrator with an established record ofcreative achievement and professional accomplishment who is deeplyengaged with current industry knowledge, standards, and bestpractices. A terminal degree (MFA) in Illustration or a relatedfield is preferred but not required. The successful candidate willhave strong interpersonal skills. Preferred Qualifications Include: Demonstrate excellence in teaching toundergraduate students with knowledge of both historic traditionsand current trends in illustration/graphic arts. An extensive and high level of skillin traditional illustration media, along with strong knowledge ofdigital media and the ability to readily adapt to new media andtechnologies.The ability and desire to teachacross a wide range of undergraduate illustration courses, both incontent and learning level, as well as teaching recurring electiveswithin the candidate's expertise.Professional illustration experienceand a record of accomplishment in the field of illustration isrequired.An MFA or equivalent experience as aprofessional is required.Evidence of curriculum developmentand college service is desirable. BENEFITS Compensation ranges from $50,000 to $62,000, based on experienceand rank. Faculty's Full time engagement with the college typicallyranges from mid-August to mid-May. A comprehensive benefits packageis offered, including health, dental, and retirementbenefits.
