Summary Director (Medical Oncologist), Cancer Risk & Prevention
Clinic The Maine Medical Center Cancer Institute (MMCCI) is seeking
a full-time medical oncologist to serve as Director of the Cancer
Risk and Prevention Clinic (CRPC), which provides essential
leadership and service throughout our rapidly evolving MaineHealth
Cancer Care Network (MHCCN) and the State of Maine.This physician
leader must have demonstrable expertise in predictive and
preventive oncology and especially cancer genetics risk assessment
and counseling.Additional expertise in molecular oncology is also
highly desirable and would add enormous value to our organization.
Contemporary comprehensive cancer programs are growing within the
MHCCN with an expanding cancer risk program and a newly launched
initiative focusing on precision medicine and specifically cancer
genomics.There may also be opportunities to participate in the
evolving Maine Cancer Genomics Initiative (MCGI) led by the Jackson
Laboratory in partnership with the Maine Medical Center Research
Institute. Training and experience in health services research is
desired, but not required.Appointment on the faculty of Tufts
University School of Medicine and participating in the Maine Track
program are expected as well. The MMC Cancer Risk and Prevention
Clinic is an outpatient service that gives primary and specialty
care physicians and patients access to state-of-the-art cancer risk
assessment and prevention services, particularly for hereditary
risk assessment and counseling. The clinic provides hereditary risk
assessment and counseling for all types of adult-onset cancers
including: colon, breast, ovarian, pancreas, kidney, prostate and
skin as well as less common tumors and pediatric cancers. The
clinic also supports several telemedicine clinics to expand
services in the more rural areas within the MHCCN. Patients and
families are referred to the clinic from throughout Maine and parts
of New Hampshire. The desired candidate will provide leadership and
direction for our growing cancer risk assessment program, attend
clinic 3-days per week, and staff telemedicine clinics. The program
currently supports 24 full-time and one part-time cancer genetics
counselors, with plans to add two more full-time counselors in the
next year.The candidate will apply skills to: promote cancer
prevention and control by integrating assessment of cancer
susceptibility and oncology knowledge into clinical practice;
recommend risk-appropriate options for cancer surveillance and
prevention as part of comprehensive cancer risk assessment,
including imaging, chemoprevention and surgical interventions;
understand the medical, legal, and psychosocial ramifications of
hereditary cancer susceptibility counseling and testing;
demonstrate familiarity with the roles and practical issues of
clinical research that are related to Human Subjects Protections,
Informed Consent, Institutional Review Board and HIPAA; provide
resources and information on current hereditary cancer registries,
cancer epidemiology, and cancer prevention studies to patients and
professional colleagues; provide research training and support by
participating in collaborative institutional and
multi-institutional research activities; incorporate web-based
resources into ongoing practice-based education, professional
development, and research network support; support and promote
primary and continuing medical education in predictive and
preventive oncology at local and regional levels;support and
promote public education in predictive and preventive oncology at
local and regional levels; and provide expertise in the evolving
field of cancer genomics to support local and regional precision
medicine initiatives. Situated on the Maine coast, Portland offers
