Job Description:

The Safe Patient Handling Coordinator will work closely with the SPH Manager and key stakeholders across MaineHealth to promote caregiver safety during patient mobility tasks. With an eye for care team injury prevention, the SPH Coordinator will promote evidence based safe mobility strategies including individualized patient assessment, mobility equipment use, and early, progressive mobility. Day to day functions of the role include care team education through in-services and hands on instruction, participation on Safe Patient Handling & Mobility Committees at local health systems, reviewing and analyzing patient handling injuries, consulting on challenging to mobilize patients, making equipment recommendations, and program development to promote a Culture of Safety during patient mobility. Our ideal candidate has 3-5 years of varied experience in hospital, outpatient, rehab or long-term care settings. A passion for education, and a comfort with presenting to audiences at all levels is a must for success. This 20-hour position offers flexibility to work around your personal needs, but also requires your flexibility to present programs, as needed, to Care Team members on all shifts. The ability to travel to all MaineHealth organizations is required. Position Summary
A primary goal of Employee Health Services, partnering with the Safety Department, is to support the provision of quality health care and patient safety within a safe work environment. Given the continuous evolution of health care practice and the SPH program must evolve to meet requirements, demands, and expectations within this dynamic healthcare environment. In collaboration with multiple stakeholders, the SPHC designs, implements, and evaluates the SPH programs. Through a high level of competence, the SPHC must effectively and creatively address the learning needs of diverse groups of employees and organizations within MaineHealth. The SPHC works in partnership with colleagues across disciplines and organizations towards a continually improving SPH program. The SPHC will function as the primary driver of SPH programs at some of the MaineHealth members and in a consultative role for other members.
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
Education: N/A
License/Certifications: Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse, Physical Therapist or Occupational Therapist as required by the State of Maine.
Experience: Professional knowledge of the theories, principles, and practice of SPH methods with strong competence in educational curriculum design, technology and program analysis. A minimum of five years of hands on care is required and prior practice in diverse clinical settings is a plus.
Comprehensive understanding of complex systems, organizational structure, health care quality, and regulatory and accreditation standards in order to support the strategic plans of MaineHealth and MMC.
Exceptional interpersonal skills to coach and mentor individuals and/or to lead, facilitate, and support team-based and inter-professional initiatives within and/or beyond the organization.
Demonstrated achievement relative to program management and functioning as a subject matter expert.
Must be able to work a variety of scheduled hours including all shifts and occasionally weekends.
Must be able to adjust quickly to the demands and needs of the program.
Must be able to work independently and demonstrate initiative.
